Why it Matters? 

  • Ahead of the Vice-Presidential election, several regional parties announced abstention, while major alliances prepared their MPs for voting.  

 What You Should Know? 

  • Electoral College 

  • The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament (Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha). 

  • State Legislatures are not involved, unlike the Presidential election. 

  • Voting System 

  • Proportional representation by single transferable vote (STV) is used. 

  • Voting is by secret ballot. 

  • Votes are transferred according to preference until a candidate secures a majority of valid votes. 

  • Eligibility 

  • Must be a citizen of India, at least 35 years old, and eligible to be a member of Rajya Sabha. 

  • Cannot hold any office of profit under the Government of India or any state government. 

  • Nomination 

  • A candidate must submit a nomination paper signed by at least 20 MPs as proposers and 20 MPs as seconders. 

  • A security deposit of ₹15,000 is required.
