Venezuela Crude Oil Reserves
Context:
The United States has ordered a total and complete blockade of sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, labelling the government a foreign terrorist organisation.
This move aims to tighten the stranglehold on the regime, as crude sales represent more than 90% of Venezuela's export income.
Despite holding the world's largest oil reserves, Venezuela struggles to monetize them due to sanctions, economic instability, and infrastructure decay.
Venezuela's Crude Oil Reserves:
Venezuela possesses the largest proven oil reserves in the world, estimated at over 303 billion barrels.
The vast majority of these reserves are located in the Orinoco Belt.
The oil found here is primarily extra-heavy crude.
Unlike the light crude found in the Middle East, this type is thicker and requires more complex and expensive processing (refining) to be commercially usable.
