Udaygiri-Himgiri
Why it Matters?
The Navy will commission stealth frigates Udaygiri and Himgiri under Project 17A, featuring 75% indigenous content, advanced stealth and sensors, marking the first dual warship commissioning and boosting India’s maritime power.
What You Should Know?
Udaygiri was built at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai, while Himgiri was built at GRSE, Kolkata.
Both ships were designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB). Udaygiri is the 100th warship designed in-house.
They are advanced versions of the Shivalik-class frigates.
Key features include better stealth technology, powerful weapons, modern sensors, CODOG propulsion (diesel or gas engines), and an Integrated Platform Management System.
Around 75% of the ships’ components are indigenously made, with strong participation from MSMEs, supporting Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Project 17A (Nilgiri-class)
It is a series of advanced stealth-guided missile frigates.
It is developed as follow-ons to the Shivalik-class (Project 17) for the Indian Navy to enhance its blue-water capabilities.
Designed indigenously by the Warship Design Bureau, seven frigates are being built under this—four by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
