The ICGEB was established in 1983 as a UNIDO project and became an autonomous organization in 1994.
It is an Inter-governmental Organisation dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology.
Its headquarters are located in Trieste, Italy, with regional centres in New Delhi, India, and Cape Town, South Africa.
The centre focuses on research in biotechnology, biomedicine, agriculture, and environmental sciences.
BioE3(Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy
The BioE3 Policy was approved in August 2024.
It promotes biomanufacturing and bio-based innovations.
The policy establishes biofoundries, Bio-AI hubs, and biomanufacturing hubs.
Six focus sectors include bio-based chemicals, smart proteins, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture, and marine/space biotech.
