  • ICGEB New Delhi marked the first anniversary of the BioE3 Policy with BioE3@1, uniting research institutes and industry to advance climate-resilient agriculture, clean energy, and lab-to-market innovations, reinforcing India’s bioeconomy and Net Zero 2070 commitment. 

What You Should Know?  

  • The ICGEB was established in 1983 as a UNIDO project and became an autonomous organization in 1994. 

  • It is an Inter-governmental Organisation dedicated to advanced research and training in molecular biology and biotechnology.  

  • Its headquarters are located in Trieste, Italy, with regional centres in New Delhi, India, and Cape Town, South Africa. 

  • The centre focuses on research in biotechnology, biomedicine, agriculture, and environmental sciences. 

BioE3(Biotechnology for Economy, Environment and Employment) Policy 

  • The BioE3 Policy was approved in August 2024. 

  • It promotes biomanufacturing and bio-based innovations. 

  • The policy establishes biofoundries, Bio-AI hubs, and biomanufacturing hubs. 

  • Six focus sectors include bio-based chemicals, smart proteins, precision biotherapeutics, climate-resilient agriculture, carbon capture, and marine/space biotech.
