Shipki La
Context: Himachal Pradesh has opened the strategically important Shipki La Pass near the India-China border for tourism, with CM Sukhu launching a border tourism initiative to boost the local economy and proposing it as a new route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Important Pointers:
Shipki La: A high-altitude mountain pass located in the Great Himalayas in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, on the India-China border.
Elevation: Located at an altitude of over 4,000 metres above sea level.
River Entry Point: The Satluj River (called Langqen Zangbo in Tibet) enters India through this pass.
Strategic Importance: Hosts several key buildings used by Indian security agencies and offers a height advantage to India over China in the border area.
Border Trade: Historically used for marginal Indo-Tibetan trade, including livestock exchange, though trade has been halted since COVID-19 (2019).
Tourism Development (2025): From June 10, 2025, Shipki La is being opened to Indian tourists with Aadhaar-based identity checks under tight security protocols.
Purpose of Opening: Aims to boost tourism in the remote tribal belt and assert India’s civilian and strategic presence in a sensitive region.
Access Limitations: Only Indian nationals are allowed; the region remains cut off in winter due to heavy snowfall.
Government Coordination: The decision to open the pass followed high-level consultations between defence personnel and Himachal Pradesh authorities.
Infrastructure Improvements: Better road connectivity and coordination between civil and military agencies have enabled seasonal access.
