  • Context:

  • The Sevilla Forum on Debt is a new global platform to address mounting sovereign debt challenges.

  • It was launched at the 16th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD16) in Geneva.

  • What is it?

  • It is a Spanish-led initiative supported by UNCTAD and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA)

  • Key Features:

  • Its aim is to create an inclusive space for dialogue and action on sovereign debt reform.

  • Its goal is to advance fair and sustainable debt solutions and reform the global debt architecture

  • The Forum will act as a "vital bridge between borrowers and creditors".

  • It will track the implementation of political commitments and help transform them into institutional mechanisms for fairer debt governance.

  • The Forum is one of the first tangible outcomes of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development.

  • It is part of the "Sevilla Platform for Action" and complements the "Sevilla Commitment" which is the main outcome document adopted at FfD4 that sets a roadmap for addressing unsustainable debt burdens in developing economies.

  • The launch comes as global public debt hit $102 trillion in 2024 and with 3.4 billion people living in countries that spend more on debt servicing than on health or education.
