Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP)
Context:
The 8th Jan Aushadhi Diwas was organized in New Delhi on March 7, 2026.
During the event, the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers and the Minister of State honored top-performing Janaushadhi Kendra owners for their outstanding contributions.
About PMBJP:
The primary aim of the PMBJP is to supply high-quality generic medicines at prices that are 50-80% lower than their branded counterparts.
These generic medicines maintain the exact same therapeutic value as branded drugs, ensuring no compromise on quality.
Currently, there are over 18,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras operating successfully across India.
The government has set a target to expand this network to 25,000 Kendras by March 2027.
This expansion is designed to ensure access to affordable medicines even in rural and remote areas.
The scheme functions on a franchisee-based model, allowing private individuals and organizations to establish and run these centers.
Promoting Inclusive Entrepreneurship:
The scheme includes special provisions to boost inclusive entrepreneurship.
Women, SC/ST candidates, Divyangjan (specially-abled individuals), and veterans are provided with special financial incentives of up to ₹2 lakh to help them establish their own Janaushadhi Kendras.
Digital Access:
Jan Aushadhi Suvidha:
To improve menstrual health and hygiene, the Kendras provide 'Jan Aushadhi Suvidha' sanitary napkins at a highly subsidized rate of just ₹1 per pad.
Sugam Mobile App:
To enhance digital access to affordable healthcare, the government has introduced the 'Sugam' mobile app, which helps users locate their nearest Kendra and check medicine availability.
Impact:
Medicines constitute a significant share of household out-of-pocket expenditure.
By reducing treatment costs, the PMBJP provides vital financial protection, particularly for economically vulnerable populations.
