Context:
The Union Budget 2026-27 has proposed to develop Rakhigarhi into a "vibrant, experiential cultural destination"
Rakhigarhi (Haryana):
It is the largest site of Harappan culture in the Indian subcontinent.
The Centre has decided to allocate ₹500 crore to develop it into a global landmark.
The plan includes opening excavated landscapes to the public through curated walkways, introducing immersive storytelling, and setting up conservation labs and interpretation centers.
The Haryana government has prepared a ₹206 crore detailed project report.
A hostel, guest house, and cafeteria have been constructed, and civil work for a museum is reportedly near completion.
Development of 15 Archaeological Sites:
The finance minister proposed to develop 15 archaeological sites to boost tourism and cultural heritage.
Key Sites include:
Rakhigarhi, Haryana
Lothal, Gujarat
Dholavira, Gujarat
Adichanallur, Tamil Nadu
Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh
Hastinapur, Uttar Pradesh
Leh Palace, Ladakh.
Objective:
To transform these locations into iconic sites with on-site museums, better amenities, and technology-driven interpretation centers.
