  • Context: 

  • He is also known as Kodi Katha Kumaran. 

  • He is a revered martyr and an icon of the Indian independence movement in Tamil Nadu.  

  • His sacrifice is significant because it embodies unwavering patriotism and defiance against British colonial rule. 

  • Contributions to National Movement:  

  • He was deeply influenced by Gandhian principles and became actively involved in the freedom struggle.  

  • He founded the Desa Bandhu Youth Association, which organized numerous anti-British protest marches across Tamil Nadu. 

  • On January 11, 1932, Kumaran participated in a patriotic march in Tirupur to protest the arrest of Mahatma Gandhi.  

  • During the protest, the British forces launched a brutal lathi charge on the demonstrators. 

  • Despite being severely beaten, Kumaran refused to let go of the Indian National Flag he was carrying.  

  • He was later found dead on the street, still clutching the flag, at the young age of 27. 

  • Honours:  

  • To honor his sacrifice, a commemorative stamp was issued in 2004, and the Tirupur Kumaran Memorial was erected in Tirupur.  

  • Several roads have also been named after him in Tamil Nadu.
