Parliament Museum
Context:
The modernization and upgradation of the Parliament Museum is gathering pace
The project is slated for completion by April 2026.
Originally scheduled for August 2023, the project faced delays due to disagreements over content.
Historical Background:
The original Parliament Museum was inaugurated by then President APJ Abdul Kalam on August 15, 2006
In 2023, all exhibits were dismantled to upgrade the facility.
This upgraded museum is not a part of the Central Vista redevelopment master plan
Administrative Control:
The museum falls under the administration of the Lok Sabha Secretariat
Key Features and Themes:
The museum will showcase India as the mother of democracy tracing history from the 6th Century BC Mahajanapadas through to modern times.
It aims to highlight how democracy is intrinsic to the Indian ethos, contrasting India's stability with neighboring nations.
New themes include local governance, celebration of democracy and the making of the Constitution.
Due to space constraints preventing the use of life-size statues, the upgraded museum will rely heavily on interactive displays and technology to accommodate content
Recent Developments:
The project cost has risen to nearly ₹24 crore, up from the earlier estimate of ₹15 crore
The National Museum Institute (NMI), initially tasked with content creation, has been replaced by a private firm, Pan Intellecom Ltd, following disagreements over content quality and sourcing.
