Operation Thunder 2025
Context:
A month-long global crackdown code-named “Operation Thunder 2025” has resulted in the seizure of over 30,000 live animals.
The operation involved enforcement agencies from 134 countries targeting the illegal wildlife and forestry trade.
About Operation Thunder:
It is an annual global operation aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for the illegal trade in wildlife and timber.
The operation is jointly coordinated by Interpol and the World Customs Organization (WCO).
It brings together police, customs, border agencies, environment, wildlife, and forestry officials to identify and arrest traffickers.
Key Highlights of 2025:
Authorities seized more than 30,000 live animals (including 10,500 butterflies, spiders, and insects) as well as significant quantities of ivory, reptile parts, and coral.
A fishing vessel carrying 4.2 tonnes of pangolin scales was seized in Vietnam.
The operation revealed a shift in trafficking patterns towards smaller species (like insects and reptiles)
This is likely due to the ease of concealment and high market demand.
The crackdown highlighted that wildlife crime networks increasingly intersect with other serious crimes (including drug trafficking and human exploitation)
Traffickers are increasingly using online platforms to conduct illegal trade.
