Why it Matters? 

  • The Ministry of Education has released the NIRF Rankings 2025, spotlighting the best institutions across categories like engineering, management, law, medicine & others. 

What You Should Know? 

Important findings 

  • IIT-Madras has once again secured the top position as the best engineering college in India and continues to lead in the overall category.  

  • IIT-Madras has also gained number one rank in the newly introduced SDG category. 

  • Five other IITs also featured in this year’s top 10 along with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. 

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)  

  • It was launched by the Ministry of Education on 29 September 2015.  

  • It was developed to rank higher education institutions across India annually.  

  • NIRF evaluates institutions based on five broad parameters, each weighted accordingly: 

  • Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) 

  • Research and Professional Practice (RP) 

  • Graduation Outcomes (GO) 

  • Outreach & Inclusivity (OI) 

  • Peer Perception (PR)
