National Red List Assessment (NRLA)
Context:.
India has launched its first-of-its-kind National Red List Assessment (NRLA) initiative.
It is a comprehensive survey to assess the extinction risk of nearly 11,000 species of native plants and animals.
This initiative will be one of the most comprehensive national efforts globally, bringing together taxonomists, conservation biologists, and other experts.
Basics of the Assessment:
The primary goal is to publish National Red Data Books for both flora and fauna by 2030.
These books will serve as a crucial resource for evidence-based conservation planning, development strategies, and policy-making
The assessment will adhere to the globally accepted standards and guidelines established by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
Nodal Agencies:
The initiative will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), with the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and the Botanical Survey of India (BSI)serving as the nodal agencies.
Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF)
The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) is a landmark global agreement adopted under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
It aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and put nature on a path to recovery by 2030.
The framework sets out ambitious goals and targets for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
India's National Red List Assessment is a direct step towards fulfilling its commitments under the KM-GBF and the CBD.
