National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture:

Context:

Indore, consistently celebrated as India’s cleanest city, recently faced a dual narrative:

Receiving top honors in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards

It is also simultaneously grappling with a severe water contamination crisis in the Bhagirathpura area.

Indore Water Tragedy:

In December 2025, sewage contamination in drinking water led to at least eight deaths and over 200 hospitalizations in Bhagirathpura

Residents reported foul-smelling, acid-like water mixing with drain water

Prima facie investigations revealed a toilet was constructed directly over a drinking water line without a safety tank, causing leakage

Despite complaints starting in October 2025, officials delayed action.

Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards:

President of India conferred the awards, with Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai entering the Super Swachh League.

New Clean Cities likeAhmedabad, Bhopal, and Lucknow emerged as top performers in the Swachh Shehar category.

23 cities were felicitated under the Super Swachh League.
