National Agriculture Market (e-NAM)
Context:
The central government recently released updated data showcasing the comprehensive digital transformation of agricultural trade in India through the National Agriculture Market (e-NAM).
The latest figures demonstrate that the platform has scaled significantly since its inception, functioning as a critical intervention to modernize fragmented regional markets.
Historical Background and Objectives:
Agriculture constitutes a foundational pillar of India's socio-economic structure, directly sustaining nearly half of the country's workforce and shaping its broader developmental trajectory.
Historically, agricultural marketing evolved through a network of physical, regulated mandis operating under the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) framework.
While the traditional APMC system facilitated structured commodity exchange across localized regions, e-NAM was introduced to digitally modernize this framework.
The platform aims to break down geographical barriers, promote transparent price discovery, and facilitate a structured, organized exchange of agricultural commodities on a unified, pan-India scale.
Achievements (as of March 2026):
The digital platform has successfully integrated a massive network of 1,656 mandis spanning across 23 States and 4 Union Territories.
Demonstrating broad adoption, over 1.80 crore farmers, 2.73 lakh traders, and 4,724 Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPOs) have successfully registered on the platform.
Demonstrating growing scale and deeper market engagement, the total value of agricultural trade handled by e-NAM surged significantly from ₹3.19 lakh crore in 2024 to a staggering ₹4.84 lakh crore by March 2026.
Between 2016 and March 2026, the platform successfully recorded a cumulative trade volume of 13.25 crore metric tonnes.
Sustained operational momentum was observed recently, with 204.76 lakh metric tonnes traded in periods leading up to March 2026.
To further empower producers and provide immediate market intelligence, the platform offers mobile-based price information services covering 247 distinct commodities through the e-NAM app.
