Mission Poshan 2.0 and POSHAN Abhiyaan
Context:
A recent government release highlighted the ongoing achievements of Mission Poshan 2.0 in strengthening India's nutrition ecosystem.
As India advances towards the vision of a 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047, continued investments in early childhood development, nutrition, and service delivery systems are being prioritized to build a resilient and productive population.
Features of the Mission:
Launched on March 8, 2018, POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) is India's flagship, multi-ministerial National Nutrition Mission.
It marks a critical policy shift in India, treating nutrition not merely as a welfare concern, but as a national priority intrinsically linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and human capital development.
The mission is anchored in the Ministry of Women & Child Development.
Mission Poshan 2.0 adopts an integrated strategy that combines nutrition with health, early childhood care, education, and active community engagement to holistically support vulnerable populations.
The governance architecture of the mission heavily embeds digital tracking.
The use of digital tools like the Poshan Tracker Application enables near real-time monitoring of over 14 lakh Anganwadi Centres and tracks the nutritional progress of nearly 9 crore beneficiaries nationwide.
Jan Andolan (People’s Movement):
A core pillar of POSHAN Abhiyaan is its immense focus on community mobilization.
Through nationwide, community-centric initiatives such as Poshan Maah and Poshan Pakhwada, the mission has successfully generated over 150 crore nutrition-related activities, ensuring that nutritional awareness and behavioral changes reach the grassroots level.
