Lake Tanganyika

Context: Lake Tanganyika's eastern shores witnessed devastating floods in May 2025, resulting in over 100 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Important Pointers: 

  • Location: Lies in the Great Rift Valley of East Africa; shared by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, and Zambia. 

  • Geographical Significance: 

  •  World’s second deepest lake (after Lake Baikal) 

  •  Longest freshwater lake in the world (~673 km) 

  •  The second largest by volume globally 

  •  Type: Rift lake formed due to tectonic activity (part of the East African Rift System) 

  • Drainage: Flows into the Congo River system, eventually reaching the Atlantic Ocean

  •  Over 1,500 species, many endemic 

  •  Rich in cichlid fishes (important for evolutionary studies)
