Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project

Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project
  • Context:

  • On January 18, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor project in Kaliabor, Assam.

  • The project is estimated to cost over ₹6,950 Crore.

  • It involves the 4-laning of the Kaliabor-Numaligarh section of NH-715 (formerly NH-37).

  • Objective:

  • A significant portion of the highway will be elevated to separate vehicular traffic from wildlife movement paths.

  • The primary goal is to prevent animal mortality due to road accidents

  • This is crucial during the monsoon season when animals migrate from the flooded Kaziranga National Park to the higher grounds of the Karbi Anglong hills.

  • Regulatory Approval & Conditions:

  • The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) approved the project but imposed 34 strict conditions to mitigate ecological impact.

  • Key Restrictions include:

  • Strict enforcement of speed limits for vehicles.

  • Construction activities are restricted to specific hours to minimize disturbance to wildlife.

  • Implementation of sound barriers to reduce noise pollution in the sensitive zone.

  • Ensuring unobstructed passage for animals underneath the elevated sections.
