INS Tamal
Why it Matters?
INS Tamal, to be commissioned on July 1, 2025, is the last Indian Navy warship to be built abroad, symbolizing India’s shift towards indigenous warship production under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
What You Should Know?
INS Tamal is the eighth and final Krivak-class stealth frigate built by Russia for India; to be commissioned at Kaliningrad, Russia on 01 July 2025.
It was built at Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad, Russia and it is the last foreign-built warship to be inducted by India.
The name "Tamal" represents the mythical sword of Indra, the King of Gods, symbolizing strength and honour.
The ship’s mascot is inspired by ‘Jambavant’, the immortal bear king of Indian mythology, aligned with Russia’s Eurasian Brown Bear, forming the crew’s nickname: “The Great Bears.”
Tamal’s motto “Sarvada Sarvatra Vijaya” (Victorious Always, Everywhere) reflects the Indian Navy’s ethos of being a Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future-Ready Force.
It is a 125-metre-long, 3,900-tonne frigate that is a product of India–Russia collaboration, incorporating 26% indigenous components, including:
BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system (for both land and sea targets)
HUMSA-NG Mk II sonar
Surface Surveillance Radar
Electronic Warfare Suite
Vertical Launch Surface-to-Air Missiles (VL-SAMs)
New-generation Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) systems
30mm Close-In Weapon System (CIWS)
Anti-submarine torpedoes and rockets
Tamal features network-centric warfare systems, multi-role helicopters, air early warning platforms, and modern communication, navigation, and data-link equipment.
With a top speed of over 30 knots, the ship is built for long endurance missions, offering a high tonnage-to-firepower ratio.
Tamal is a true multi-role frigate, capable of anti-ship, anti-air, anti-submarine, and land-attack operations.
Tamal is the second ship of the Tushil class, which is an upgraded version of the Talwar and Teg classes.
India is concurrently building two Triput-class frigates at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) with design assistance and technology transfer from Russia.
Post-commissioning, Tamal will join the Western Fleet, known as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy, enhancing its capabilities in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
