IndiaAI Mission

Context: Three firms, Socket AI, Gan.AI, and Gnani.ai have been chosen under the India AI Mission to help develop an indigenous foundational AI large language model (LLM). 

Important Pointers:  

  • Objective: To build a robust Artificial Intelligence (AI) infrastructure in India for developing and testing indigenous AI systems. 

  •  Mission Goals: Enhance data quality, develop native AI technologies, attract top talent, support impactful startups, and promote ethical AI practices

  • Financial Outlay: The Union Cabinet approved ₹10,372 crore in March 2024 for implementing the India AI Mission. 

  • Initial GPU Procurement: The project begins by procuring 300–500 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to kickstart computing infrastructure. 

  •  India AI Compute Capacity: Establishment of a national-scale AI compute ecosystem with over 10,000 GPUs to support AI startups, researchers, and an AI marketplace for compute and model sharing. 

  • GPU Significance: GPUs are crucial for parallel processing and essential for large-scale machine learning (ML), media analytics, 3D rendering, AI model training, and cloud-based applications

  • India AI Innovation Centre: A dedicated centre for developing Indigenous Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and foundational AI models, especially for Indian languages and sectors like healthcare, agriculture, and governance. ₹2,000 crore is earmarked. 

  • India AI Datasets Platform: A unified national platform offering high-quality non-personal datasets to startups, researchers, and institutions for AI model development. 

  • India AI Application Development Initiative: Encourages building AI solutions addressing real-world problems in various Government of India (GoI) sectors, with a focus on socio-economic transformation

  • India AI Future Skills: Promotes AI education through Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programs. It also includes setting up Data and AI Labs in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities

  • India AI Startup Financing: Government-supported funding pipeline for deep-tech startups, covering various stages of growth and innovation. About ₹2,000 crore is allocated. 

  • Safe & Trusted AI: Development of regulatory frameworks, ethical guidelines, and indigenous tools to ensure responsible AI aligned with data privacy and user safety
