India Ranks Third Globally in Renewable Energy Capacity
Context:
According to the latest Renewable Energy Statistics 2026 report, India has officially surpassed Brazil to become the world's third-largest nation in terms of Renewable Energy Installed Capacity.
The Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy recently announced these major milestones, highlighting the country's accelerated transition toward clean energy.
Achievements and Statistics (As of 2025-26):
Data released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) confirms that, as of December 2025, India securely holds the third position globally in renewable energy installed capacity.
India is rapidly expanding its green energy infrastructure.
During the financial year 2025-26, the country achieved a massive total non-fossil capacity addition of 55.3 GW.
As of March 31, 2026, India's cumulative installed capacity from all non-fossil fuel sources has successfully reached an impressive 283.46 GW.
A major milestone in grid management and clean energy utilization was recorded in July 2025.
During this period, India achieved its highest-ever renewable energy share in daily electricity generation, with renewables effectively meeting 51.5% of the country's total electricity demand of 203 GW.
Overall Power Generation:
For the entire 2025-26 financial year (calculated up to March 2026), India's total power generation stood at a massive 1,845.921 Billion Units (BU).
Non-Fossil Share in Generation:
Of the total electricity generated during FY 2025-26, the share derived specifically from non-fossil fuel sources reached a commendable 29.2%.
Breakdown of Renewable Generation:
The robust growth in the non-fossil sector is driven by a diverse mix of clean energy sources.
The nation's renewable energy generation matrix explicitly includes substantial, growing contributions from Solar, Wind, and BioPower, alongside large hydro projects.
These combined sources are directly responsible for driving the total non-fossil generation share up to its current levels.
