Impact of Venezuela Crisis on India’s Energy Security

Context:

Following the recent United States military intervention in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro, concerns arose regarding global oil markets.

However, analysis indicates that the crisis is unlikely to have any direct impact on India's energy security.

Current Status of Trade:

In the current financial year, Venezuelan crude accounted for only 0.3% of India's total oil imports.

India’s imports from Venezuela have dropped sharply since 2019 due to U.S. sanctions.

For comparison, imports plummeted from $11.6 billion in 2014-15 to negligible levels in recent years.

Indian refiners had already reduced commercial engagements with Venezuela to avoid the risks associated with U.S. secondary sanctions.

Why is the impact limited?

Venezuela currently contributes only about 1% of global oil supplies and 3.5% of OPEC's total exports.

Venezuelan oil is predominantly "heavy oil," which requires specialized refineries for processing.

Most of this supply currently goes to China rather than the global open market.

The large distance and existing logistical constraints further limit India's dependence on this region.
