I2U2 (India-Israel-UAE-USA)
Context:
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Israel, India and Israel reaffirmed their commitment to work closely for the implementation of the I2U2 and the India Middle East Economic Corridor (IMEC) projects.
This commitment was highlighted despite the ongoing tensions prevailing in the Gulf region
About the I2U2 Initiative:
The grouping comprises India, Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
It is recognized as a modern "Mini lateral" organization whose priorities are firmly set on a "geoeconomic agenda".
The primary aim of the initiative is to increase multilateral cooperation across key areas, specifically focusing on connectivity, digital public infrastructure, and food production.
Geopolitical Context and Progress:
In his address at Jerusalem, PM Modi emphasized that "peace and stability in West Asia are directly linked to India's security interests".
He reiterated India's consistent stance for a peaceful resolution through dialogue, reflecting the broader calls of the Global South.
The discussions acknowledged the complex regional situation, including tensions between Iran and the Israel-U.S. coalition.
While it was noted that the volatile "regional situation does weigh on the progress of the initiative," officials clarified that countries are actively taking steps in their "national capacities" to advance these ambitious projects.
Bilateral Milestones Achieved:
The visit also served to strengthen the underlying bilateral relationship that supports the I2U2 framework:
Special Strategic Partnership:
The bilateral relationship was formally described as a "special strategic partnership" in the joint statement.
Free Trade Agreement:
Both leaders have formally instructed their respective negotiating teams to prepare for an "early signing of a Free Trade Agreement"
Technological & Resource Cooperation:
Among multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) sealed, a notable agreement was signed on "geophysical exploration."
This will enhance bilateral cooperation in mineral exploration utilizing advanced geophysical and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, focusing on sustainable resource development.
