Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Norwegian counterpart Jonas Gahr Store on May 18th 2026 expanded bilateral ties to a Green Strategic Partnership, unlocking a range of agreements spanning clean energy, maritime security, digital health, space cooperation and the blue economy.

  • Green Strategic Partnership:

The India-Norway Green Strategic Partnership marks the elevation of bilateral relations.

Energy Cooperation:

A major pillar of the partnership is cooperation in clean and renewable energy

Both countries agreed to deepen engagement in renewable energy technologies, green hydrogen, offshore wind energy, and climate-friendly industrial solutions.

Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative:

The partnership also places strong emphasis on the blue economy and sustainable ocean governance.

Green shipping and maritime decarbonisation constitute another major dimension of the partnership.

Cooperation covers green shipping technologies, hydrogen and ammonia-based fuels, smart ports, port digitalisation, automation, cybersecurity, shipbuilding, and quality shipping standards.

Arctic and polar research form a strategically significant component of bilateral cooperation.

  • Importance of Green Strategic Partnership:

Economically, the Green Strategic Partnership is linked with the India-European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to attract nearly $100 billion in investment and generate around one million jobs in India over fifteen years.

Norway’s expertise in sustainable energy systems and maritime decarbonisation complements India’s expanding renewable energy sector and long-term energy transition goals.

Norway’s leadership in green maritime technologies aligns with India’s ambitions under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
