Why it Matters? 

  • Namibia has formally joined the India-led Global Biofuel Alliance, reflecting growing South-South cooperation in sustainable energy.  

What You Should Know? 

  • The Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) was launched by India along with USA, Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Singapore, Bangladesh, Mauritius and UAE on 9th September 2023, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi, as Chair’s initiative. 

  • GBA is a multi-stakeholder alliance comprising governments, international organizations, and industries. 

  • The alliance aims to promote the adoption and production of sustainable biofuels like ethanol, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). 

  • It works to implement internationally recognized standards and codes in the biofuels sector. 

  • Currently, 24 countries and 12 international organizations are part of the alliance. 

  • GBA has held three meetings of the Temporary Executive Committee (TEC) to define immediate initiatives.

History: 

  • India was among the first countries to raise Namibia’s independence issue at the United Nations (UN) in 1946. 

  • India hosted the first diplomatic mission of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) and provided material support to Namibia’s freedom movement.
