Why In News:

APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) facilitated the first export consignment of GI-tagged Tezpur Litchi from Assam to Dubai on 7 June 2026.

What is GI Tagging?

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin.

Governed by:Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.

Administered by:Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) under DPIIT (Ministry of Commerce and Industry).

India is a member of the TRIPS Agreement (WTO) which provides the international legal basis for GI protection.

About Tezpur Litchi

Grown in the Tezpur region of Assam.

Known for exceptional sweetness, bright-red appearance, distinctive aroma, and superior eating quality.

Varieties cultivated: Bombaya, Bilati, Elaichi, Piyaji, and Sahi.

About APEDA

Statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Established under the APEDA Act, 1985.

Promotes agricultural exports through infrastructure, quality assurance, capacity building, market linkage, and engagement with FPOs and exporters.
