Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) 2026
Context:
New Delhi is set to host the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) in late May 2026. This high-level convening is especially significant as it marks a strategic diplomatic reset, taking place more than a decade after the third summit was held in October 2015.
Background and Evolution:
Established during India's post-liberalisation period, the IAFS was designed in alignment with the African Union (AU) to formalise relations beyond traditional bilateral ties, rooted in shared histories of colonialism and a strong foundation of South-South solidarity.
While the absence of the summit for nearly a decade left the broader partnership without a central diplomatic anchor, India's bilateral relations have nonetheless grown steadily.
Specifically, since 2018, India has aggressively expanded its diplomatic outreach by opening 16 new missions in Africa, bringing its total diplomatic presence to 45 countries across the vast continent.
The 2026 summit will serve as a crucial platform to take stock of this vastly expanded strategic footprint.
Agenda and Focus Areas:
Official sources indicate that the primary agenda for the 2026 summit will heavily focus on comprehensive development initiatives, capacity building, education, and expanding defence cooperation.
African partners now increasingly expect India to step up with direct Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).
The summit will offer India an opportunity to highlight its recent developmental milestones in the region, such as the successful opening of the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar.
