Civil Registration System (CRS) Report 2023
Context:
The Registrar-General of India (RGI) has released the “Vital Statistics of India” based on the Civil Registration System report for the year 2023.
This report provides key data on registered births, deaths, and sex ratios across the country
Key Highlights
India registered 2.52 crore births in 2023 (a decline of about 2.32 lakh compared to 2022)
A total of 86.6 lakh deaths were registered (a marginal increase from the 86.5 lakh deaths recorded in 2022).
The report noted no major spike in deaths during 2022 and 2023 which is in contrast to 2021 which saw a significant rise of over 21 lakh deaths compared to 2020.
Institutional Births accounted for 74.7% of the total registered births in 2023
Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) 2023:
It is defined as the number of female births for every 1,000 male births
Level of Registration
The overall registration of births in 2023 stood at 98.4%
Timely Registration:
11 States and Union Territories, including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana, achieved over 90% registration of births within the prescribed 21-day time limit.
