Ethiopia inaugurated the $4-billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest hydroelectric project, generating 5,150 MW power. Egypt which is reliant on the Nile for 97% of its water protested at the UN citing existential concerns.
What You Should Know?
The Blue Nile (locally called Abay River) originates from Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands.
It flows about 1,450 km through Ethiopia and Sudan before joining the White Nile at Khartoum, Sudan, forming the main Nile.
It provides around 60–70% of the Nile’s total water flow, especially during monsoon (flood season).
Economic Importance
Ethiopia: Site of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) (5,150 MW, Africa’s largest hydro project).
Sudan: Supports irrigation through Sennar and Roseires Dams.
