Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS)
Context:
The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is witnessing a significant shift as the country's two largest carmakers—Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors—have embraced the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model.
Inspired by MG Motor’s success with its Windsor model, this move aims to lower acquisition costs and address consumer concerns regarding resale value and battery life.
About Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS):
Battery as a Service (BaaS) is an innovative business model that treats the battery not as a physical asset to be sold, but as a service provided to the user.
The customer pays for the car upfront but rents the battery, paying a recurring fee based on usage (e.g., per kilometre).
BaaS offers a series of value-added services, including:
Service provider is responsible for routine battery maintenance, performance monitoring, and troubleshooting
Service providers can offer users the opportunity to upgrade their batteries, allowing them to always use the latest battery technology.
BaaS service providers provide convenient battery swap services to solve users’ range concerns.
BaaS service providers are responsible for the recycling and reuse of batteries, enabling lithium battery recycling and reducing environmental pollution
Benefits:
Price Reduction:
It significantly lowers the high initial cost of EVs, bringing them closer to price parity with petrol or diesel equivalents.
Risk Transfer:
The risk of battery maintenance and degradation shifts from the vehicle owner to the manufacturer, easing "resale anxiety".
Reduce environment pollution
BaaS service providers are responsible for the recycling and reuse of batteries.
