2026-27 on Tourism and the Architecture of Growth
Context:
The Union Budget 2026-27 has identified tourism as a strategic growth driver, emphasising its potential for employment generation, foreign exchange earnings, and balanced regional development.
According to the India Tourism Data Compendium 2025, the sector contributes 5.22% to India’s GDP
Budgetary Proposals:
Purvodaya (North East):
Development of five major tourism destinations across Purvodaya states to unlock their potential.
Deployment of 4,000 e-buses to improve connectivity in the region.
Specific focus on preserving temples, monasteries, and improving amenities in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Cultural Heritage:
15 archaeological sites will be developed into "vibrant, experiential cultural destinations."
Key sites include Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur, and Leh Palace.
Eco-Tourism Diplomacy:
India will host the first Global Big Cat Summit, bringing together leaders and ministers from 95 countries.
This initiative aims to reinforce India's leadership in eco-tourism and wildlife conservation.
Medical Tourism:
Establishment of five regional medical hubs to promote India as a global centre for medical tourism services.
Significance:
The budget leverages tourism’s strong multiplier effect to create livelihoods across hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and allied services.
The proposals aim to link infrastructure, community, and culture, ensuring policy coherence through schemes like Swadesh Darshan 2.0 and PRASHAD.
